The Washington Capitals have re-signed forward Garrett Pilon to a two year contract extension. Pilon is a young forward who got some playing time last season and could potentially see a bigger role next season. His contract is worth $1.5 million. The first year of Pilon’s contract will be a two way contract where he’ll make $750,000 in the NHL and $110,000 in the AHL while the second year will be a one way contract worth $750,000.

Pilon made his NHL debut with the Caps on May 8, 2021 against the Philadelphia Flyers. The 23 year old also scored four goals and 12 assists for 16 points in 14 games with the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL). The six foot, 190 pound forward ranked third on the Bears in points per game with 1.14.

Pilon set career highs in both goals with 18 and points with 36 during the shortened 2019-20 AHL season. The Kindserley, Saskatchewan native ranked third on Hershey in goals, fifth in points and tied for second in power play goals with five. Pilon recorded 17 points combined with 10 goals and seven assists in Hershey’s final 22 games.

Pilon has 85 points in 146 career games with Hershey with 32 goals and 53 assists. Pilon played in 207 combined games from 2015-16 to 2017-18 in the Western Hockey League (WHL) with the Kamloops Blazers and the Everett Silvertips. In his WHL career he scored a nice 69 goals and 123 assists for 192 points.

During Pilon’s final season he recorded 80 points with 34 goals and 46 assists in 69 combined games between Kamloops and Everett. Pilon was selected in the third round at 87th overall in the 2016 NHL Draft.

Pilon could see more ice time depending on what General Manager Brian MacLellan does to fit the team under the salary cap. There might be some trades involved and some fresh faces which will give Pilon the chance to play more. The Pilon extension was the first of three Caps deals that were done on Thursday.
