The Washington Capitals will meet the Tampa Bay Lightning for the first time this season, Friday evening. Will the Capitals continue their winning ways from Wednesday? Here’s how to follow along.

Tampa Bay is coming off of a winning streak with a loss to the Blues, while the Washington Capitals are trying to put together a winning streak of their own after winning against the Panthers.

With this being their first time meeting this season, the last encounter for them both was at the tail end of last year’s regular season.

They met three times in the span of 15 days in March, during the middle matchup Michal Kempny was injured and ultimately lost for the next 4-6 months due to surgery. At the time the Caps had dropped the previous two meetings, but gained revenge in the last matchup by winning 6-3 on the back of Ovechkin’s 50th goal of the season.

The Caps made it past a back and forth contest with the Panthers Wednesday night. This marked their first win in three games, after dropping games against the Rangers and Canucks.

Their struggles of staying out of the penalty box continued but they managed to keep that from hurting them with no power play goals for the Panthers.

Thanks in large part on Braden Holtby saving 37 of 40 shots on goal. A key factor for the outcome was the style of play the Capitals typically bring in throwing their weight around as they out hit the Panthers 28 to 10. The Caps faithful didn’t let the recent losing keep them from honoring one of their past favorites, as the crowd gave Brett Connolly a warm welcome back to Capital One Arena.

Look for the Capitals to carry on the hitting parade with the return of Garnet Hathaway from suspension for this contest. The Capitals will still be without Hagelin and Backstrom, where the latter is slated to hopefully join the Caps on their road trip starting Saturday against Detroit.

But first things first, they need to make short work of the Tampa Bay Lightning who have largely struggled this season sitting fifth in the Atlantic Division after running away with the NHL last year.

The Lightning are dealing with their own missing pieces with Steven Stamkos dealing with a lower body injury and a recent suspension of Erik Cernak for elbowing Dahlin of the Sabres. Cernak will be serving the second game of the two game suspension.  While there still is a chance for Stamkos to play against the Caps.
