The Washington Capitals will meet the Tampa Bay Lightning for the second time this season, and in a week. Can they find the same success and production as last time, here is how to follow along.

The Washington Capitals took on the New Jersey Devils in the first of a back to back to start the weekend.

This comes after they again fell to the Blue Jackets. Luckily they found their offense in this game as they would go on to win 6-3 in New Jersey.

In this game all the stars were shinning as the Capitals got the most production from Nicklas Backstrom (2G, 2A), John Carlson (1G, 1A) and Alex Ovechkin (1G, 1A). This comes as no surprise given Backstom and Ovechkin were both competing in their joint 900th game together, in those moments these two always step up. Other than an early PP goal the Devils never had the lead. Good thing for the Capitals this would be the only time the Devils would take advantage of the extra man.

The Capitals actually were pretty matched in hits, surprisingly they were outhit by the Devils 16-13. The two were also deadlocked in the faceoff circle with an exact 50% each, and while the Devils were only off of the shot output by a few the quality for the Capitals was better as they scored six times on 29 shots versus three times on 27 shots.

Now the Capitals will look to the Tampa Bay Lightning, who they last meet a week ago in Tampa Bay. This time the Capitals will hold the home ice advantage, with Braden Holtby in net given Samsonov was in versus the Devils last night.  Since last week the Capitals have split their docket with a loss to the Jackets and a win versus the Devils.

The Lightning have also split in their games with a win over the Senators and a lose to the Stars. This team still seems to be looking for a streak but just can’t seem to keep the pace as they would like. The Capitals on the other hand would be on an 11 game win streak if it wasn’t a pair of losses to the Blue Jackets. Here’s hoping the Capitals don’t face them in the playoffs like the Lightning did last season.

Both the Lightning and the Capitals are full health for this meeting, so this will be a star studded affair. Most likely this will be a closer contest than the last time these two met, and the Capitals will need to work on staying out of the penalty box and giving one of the most talented power plays the advantage. It would not be surprising for this to go down to the goalie who plays more soundly or shutdown giving their team the best chance to win.
