Washington Capitals: Ovechkin Reaches Milestone Against the NJ Devils

Once again, the Washington Capitals give up the first goal of the game. This has been happening since October. Bratt at the 7:05 mark of the first period receives a breakaway pass and dekes Samsonov for his 13th of the season.

However, the Capitals would cut into the Devils lead with a blistering shot from John Carlson that would be eventually be tipped in front by Tom Wilson at the 14:44 mark of the second period making it 2-1. It would stay at 2-1 for the rest of the second period.

The moment you all have been waiting for. Yes, Alexander Ovechkin, scored his 42nd goal of the season and his 700th career goal.

More from Capitals News

The chase to 700 is over and now the chase to 800 begins. The next 100 goals will be the ones to watch because that will place him 94 goals away from passing one the greatest goal scorer, Wayne Gretzky, who scored 894 career goals in 20-years of playing time.

However, again, the ending of this game results in a loss and no points. After having a 4-on-3 and then a 5-4, the Capitals failed to convert. The power play continues to be a concern from everyone playing and especially the fanbase. The last time the Capitals went on a losing streak of this caliber was last season before the all-star break. It’s kind of similar when you think about it.

Ilya Samsonov performed pretty well and placed him team in a position to win the game multiple times, but was let down way too much by his defense and penalty-killing team.

He saved 26 of 29 shots in the losing effort. At the end of the day, it’s another loss. The team will head home with its heads hanging down to face the Penguins in another afternoon game.

Maybe the Capitals were too high at the beginning of the season and now they are at an all time low just like most teams go through. At least the Penguins are on a losing streak as well, falling to the Buffalo Sabers 5-2 at PPG Paints Arena for their second straight loss.

You have to think since both teams are on a low right now, losing to teams they are capable of beating, will come out strong against each other especially with the history these two teams carry from previously and currently. They surly didn’t do both teams a favor by scheduling the two to face off at the end of the season.
