The Washington Capitals have acquired IIya Kovalchuk from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for a 2020 3rd round pick.

This adds an offensive weapon that use to haunt the Washington Capitals but will now be part of the D.C. crew as they try and win their second Stanley Cup in three years. He’ll be teammates with his Russian friend, Alexander Ovechkin.

You just have to wonder if this is it for Brian MacLellan after the Capitals ended it’s skid and want to stay on the positive side of things.

During his stint with the Montreal Canadians, IIya Kovalchuk, has scored nine goals, tallied 13 assists for 22 points in 2020.

However, it’s not his scoring but his depth and veteran leadership that he will bring to a team that was struggling to get a win and two points prior to beating its arch rivals, the Penguins, Sunday afternoon 5-to-3. Simply, adding more offense won’t hurt a team like the Capitals.

The Washington Capitals will now only have a first, fourth and a fifth round pick for the 2020 NHL Draft.

At this point you have to think that they like what they have in their farm system with the, 20-year-old, Slovakia, Defensemen, Martin Fehérváry and 20-year-old, Russian Defensemen Alexander Alexeyev. If Alexeyev can get his health under control, he’ll be a fine Defensemen.

All in all, the team is gearing up for a Stanley Cup run, so adding more offensive weapons aren’t a bad idea with Kuznetsov struggling to put the puck behind the net.

Moreover, the rumors of Mike Green coming to Washington may be over most of use didn’t want to see as breaking news. For now, until the NHL Trade Deadline concludes on Monday, Feb. 24, at 3:00 p.m. ET.
