The Washington Capitals fought hard but alas fell in overtime to the Detroit Red Wings in today’s NHL 20 simulation.
These things aren’t for real but it doesn’t make this NHL 20 loss hurt any less for the Washington Capitals.
The Capitals struck first at 6:29 with a shot from Richard Panik from the left face-off circle that clanged off the right post and into the net. Tom Wilson and Nicklas Backstrom had the assists. It was Panik’s 15th goal on the season.
1-0 Washington was the score after 20 with the Caps leading in shots 9-8 and in hits 6-0 including a punishing hit from Radko Gudas on the boards.

The Caps had an awful second period allowing three unanswered Red Wings goals to put them in a 3-1 hole after two periods.
First, former Cap Mike Green tied the game on a slapshot from downtown for his 12th goal of the season. Dylan Larkin and Danny DeKeyser had the helpers. The goal came at 3:23.
The Red Wings took the lead on a goal from Valatteri Filppula for his 10th goal of the season at 14:48. The goal was assisted by Trevor Daley and former Capital Madison Bowey.
Dylan Larkin made it 3-1 at 17:33 for his 34th goal of the season. Daley and Anthony Mantha had the helpers. 3-1 was the score after 40. The Red Wings had the edge in shots 21-15 and on the face-off dot 12-10.
The Caps would rally for two goals in the third period to force overtime. They were awarded the game’s first power play when Larkin was sent to the box for tripping at 1:45. While on the attack, a downtown shot from Brendan Leipsic pinged off the post.
The Caps would later redeem themselves on the power play with a shot from John Carlson at 3:24 for his sixth goal of the season assisted by Lars Eller.
At 12:32 the Caps evened it with a shot up the middle from Eller that was assisted by Michal Kempny and Jakub Vrana. 3-3 would be the score after 60 with the Caps leading in shots 35-26 and in hits 12-1.
Anthony Mantha would win it in overtime at 1:35 making the result the exact opposite of what we wanted after the NBCSW Capitals got their own win over the Red Wings. Carl Hagelin scored twice in that game and the Caps cruised to a 6-1 win.
The Caps will look to bounce back on Monday night against the Buffalo Sabres. We’ll have something for you on how they did on Tuesday.
