Washington Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom spoke to the media on a video conference call the other day via Zoom. Here’s highlights from what he said.

Nicklas Backstrom is just like us, spending time with his family and waiting for the season to return once the novel coronavirus pandemic ends. But in the meantime, he’s enjoying life with a newborn.

Earlier in the week Backstrom’s fiancee Liza Berg gave birth to a baby girl who the couple named Alizee. She joins both her older sister Haley who’s age six and her big brother Vince who’s three.

“Father of three now. Everything’s great,” said Backstrom.

Backstrom has kept in touch with his teammates through a group chat which included a lot of baby photos. Nick Jensen and T.J. Oshie both had kids the same week in the beginning of the NHL pause. He’s also been in contact with Ryan Zimmerman of the Washington Nationals who’s eagerly waiting for the season to start.

“I could not have imagined this, and I cannot imagine how big this has turned out – a worldwide problem with everyone staying inside. It’s real hard,” said Backstrom.

Backstrom believes that Lars Eller would make a good Tiger King. He has yet to see the popular Netflix show but has seen the trailer.

Backstrom would love to see the season resume for the NHL’s determination to award a Stanley Cup this season.

“You want to finish the season with a champion. If we play mid-summer, you want to do it. You want to have a champion this year if possible. That’s for sure,” said Backstrom.

He would like to see a training camp before any games resume and that he doesn’t want the playoff tournament expanded past the usual 16 teams nor does he want to play in an empty arena.

“It would be really tough to play without the fans because they are everything to us,” Backstrom said. If that is the restriction from all the people higher up than us, then, yeah, we have to accept it.”

Backstrom has 12 goals and 42 assists for 54 points, third on the team in scoring. He recently signed a five-year, $46 million extension pretty much cementing him as a Cap for life.
