Washington Capitals: Breaking down their return to play roster
The Washington Capitals training camp roster is out.
The Washington Capitals will transition to Phase 3 of the Return to Play Plan on Monday morning when the team takes the ice at MedStar Capitals Iceplex for training camp. The roster includes 20 forwards, 10 defensemen and four goalies. The roster is going to be broken up into two squads Teams Blue and Red, and their schedules will vary. All Caps practices will be closed to the public.

This season Nicklas Backstrom finished with 12 goals and 42 assists for 54 points.
Travis Boyd C
Travis Boyd appeared in 24 games this season and scored three goals and added seven assists for 10 points.
Nic Dowd C
Nic Dowd scored seven goals and added eight assists for 15 points. Look for him to center the fourth line.
Lars Eller is enjoying a solid season where he’s scored 16 goals and added 23 assists for 39 points.
Shane Gersich LW
Shane Gersich comes from Hershey where he scored 10 goals and added eight assists for 18 points.
Carl Hagelin LW
Carl Hagelin scored eight goals and added 17 assists for 25 points. Look for him to be an impact on the penalty kill as well.
Garnet Hathaway could very well be the Caps secret weapon. With nine goals and seven assists for 16 points, he’s starting to become a fan favorite.
Ilya Kovalchuk is on a mission to win a Stanley Cup with Ovi. He’s scored one goal and added three assists for four points in seven Caps games before the pause. Look for him to light the lamp when the playoffs start.
Evgeny Kuznetsov is enjoying a bounceback season with 19 goals and 33 assists for 52 points.
Philippe Maillet C
Philippe Maillet led the Hershey Bears with 44 points and 27 assists to go along with 17 goals.
Beck Malenstyn LW
Beck Malenstyn had seven goals and eight assists for 15 points in 46 Bears games.
Connor McMichael is the top Caps prospect to watch. He scored 47 goals and 55 assists for 102 points in 52 games played for the London Knights this past season.
T.J. Oshie RW
T.J. Oshie enjoyed a breakout season where he scored 26 goals and added 23 assists for 49 points.
Alex Ovechkin took home another Rocket Richard Trophy with a 48 goal season adding 19 assists for 67 points.
Richard Panik RW
Richard Panik scored nine goals and added 13 assists for 22 points.
Garrett Pilon C
Garrett Pilon comes from the Hershey Bears where he scored 18 goals and added 18 assists for 36 points.
Brian Pinho C
Brian Pinho also comes from the Bears. He scored 20 goals and added 17 assists for 37 points.
Daniel Sprong RW
Daniel Sprong was traded here in the Christian Djoos deal. In just five games with the Bears, Sprong has recorded six points which is a goal and five assists.
Jakub Vrana LW
Jakub Vrana has enjoyed a breakout season where he scored 25 goals and added 27 assists for 52 points.
Tom Wilson RW
Tom Wilson scored 21 goals and added 23 assists for 44 points. He also has a career-low 93 penalty minutes.
Defense
Alex Alexeyev is the most interesting defensive prospect. He appeared in 58 Hershey Bears games and recorded three goals and 18 assists for 21 points.
John Carlson seat personal records for points (75) and assists (60) in a season, leading all defensemen in both categories. He has a strong case to win the Norris Trophy.
Brenden Dillon was brought on at the trade deadline to help improve the defense. Look for him on either the first or second pairing.
Martin Fehervary
Martin Fehervary appeared in six NHL games this season and had an assist. He also played in Hershey where he scored four goals and added 10 assists for 14 points.
Radko Gudas
Radko Gudas scored two goals and added 13 assists for 15 points in his first season in Washington.
Nick Jensen
Nick Jensen has eight assists this season and has improved during the second half.
Michal Kempny
Michal Kempny has three goals and 15 assists for 18 points. He looks to step up in the playoffs.
Tyler Lewington
Tyler Lewington appeared in six games earlier this season. In Herhsey he scored four goals and added nine assists for 13 points.
Dmitry Orlov
Dmitry Orlov scored four goals and added 23 assists for 27 points.
Jonas Siegenthaler
Jonas Siegenthaler scored two goals and added seven assists for nine points.
Goalies
Pheonix Copley
Pheonix Copley went 17-8-6 with a 2.47 goals-against average and a .905 save percentage with the Bears.
Braden Holtby went 25-14-6 with a 3.11 GAA and an .897 save percentage. He’s expected to be the starter.
Ilya Samsonov enjoyed a solid backup season going 16-6-2 with a 2.55 GAA and a .913 save percentage
Vitek Vanecek
Vitek Vanecek went 19-10-1 with a 2.26 GAA and .917 save percentage with the Bears.
