The Caps will face the New York Islanders for the eighth time and the first since Washington defeated New York in the first round in 2015 in seven games thanks to a clutch goal from Evgeny Kuznetsov. The Caps finished the 2019-20 regular season with a record of 41-20-8 claiming the Metropolitan Divison for the fifth straight season.
The Caps are the eighth franchise in NHL history to win five consecutive division titles and the first since the Anaheim Ducks from 2012-13 to 2016-17. With 90 points in 69 games before the suspension shortened the season, the Caps were on pace to reach the 100 point mark.
