The Washington Capitals extended qualifying offers to two players.

The Washington Capitals tendered qualifying offers to two restricted free agents before Wednesday’s 5 p.m. deadline. They extended the offers to defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler and forward Shane Gersich.

Center Travis Boyd didn’t receive a qualifying offer and neither did defensemen Kris Bindulis and Connor Hobbs. All three players could become unrestricted free agents.

That doesn’t mean the Caps can’t or won’t sign them before Friday though. Michal Kempny is on long term injured reserve so his salary is buried. After the team re-signed Brenden Dillon, they’ll enter free agency with just over $7.5 million to spend barring any trades.

Boyd joins goalie Braden Holtby, forward Ilya Kovalchuk and defenseman Radko Gudas as unrestricted free agents. Free agency begins at 12 noon on Friday.

Jonas Siegenthaler had four assists in his first season with the Caps. This past season he scored two goals and added seven assists for nine points. His advanced stats were pretty good too, well mostly his Corsi. His Corsi For percentage was 50.83 percent. His Fenwick For percentage was at 45 percent while Scoring Chances For came out at 46 percent. Advanced stats came from the lovely Natural Stat Trick.

Shane Gersich was a black ace during Washington’s 2018 run to the Stanley Cup. He has three games of regular season NHL experience and has an assist. He’s still searching for his first NHL goal.

In 2018-19 he spent time with the Hershey Bears and had eight goals and 16 assists for 24 points in 66 games. Last season with the Bears, Gersich scored 10 goals and added eight assists for 18 points.

Gersich and Siegenthaler getting qualifying offers means goodbye to Travis Boyd. Things just didn’t work out for him here but he will be well known for what he did with the Hershey Bears especially a four goal game a couple seasons ago.
