The Washington Capitals have added another defenseman.

The Washington Capitals have signed defenseman Cameron Schilling to a one year, two way contract. He will make $700,000 in the NHL and $365,000 in the AHL. This is a minor leaguer that can help the Bears out and mentor their young defense.

The 32 year old recorded 24 points with five goals and 19 assists in 54 games with the Manitoba Moose of the AHL last season, which ranked second among team defensemen.

The Cermel, Indiana native is on his second tour with the Caps. He signed with the team on March 27, 2012 as a college free agent out of Miami University of Ohio.

He made his NHL debut with the Caps on March 12, 2013 against the Carolina Hurricanes and appeared in six games with Washington from 2012-15. In 10 career games between the Capitals and Winnipeg Jets, Schilling has one assist.

Schilling played in 210 career AHL games with the Hershey Bears between 2011-15, recording 50 points with 13 goals and 37 assists. In 544 career AHL games between the Ontario Reign, the Rockford IceHogs, Manitoba and Hershey, Schilling has recorded 183 points with 43 goals and 140 assists.

Schilling will help out a Bears defensive corps and step in to help out when needed with the Caps in case there’s an injury to any of their defensemen. Yesterday the Caps added Justin Schultz to help upgrade a defense that has been struggling.

Schilling’s last NHL stint came in the 2018-19 season when he skated in four games for the Winnipeg Jets. With just 10 games of NHL experience he hopes to get more with the team that he signed with as a college free agent.
