There will be no fans at Capital One Arena to start the season.

In a letter to season ticket holders the Washington Capitals announced that their won’t be fans to begin the season at Capital One Arena but that the team “remains hopeful for the potential to host fans at Capitals games at some point” this upcoming season.

The season is set to begin on Jan. 13, 2021. Details are still being worked out and Darren Dreger mentioned that the NHL is looking at doing a 10 day training camp with no preseason games.

The good news for season ticket holders is that the Caps are deferring automatic payments from STHs and current funds will be used as credit for tickets in the future. They’ll also use a three percent bonus credit.

We are all excited for the return of hockey. I miss going to Caps games as much as you do but the Caps made the right call by not having fans in the stands to begin the season. With the novel coronavirus pandemic not out of the woods yet, we still need to slow the spread and we can do that by not gathering at a game.

Caps fans are as loyal as they come in hockey. They’ve had a sellout streak that has stretched for the last decade. They’ve showed out on the road. They’ve packed practices at MedStar. It’s going to be different playing in an empty building.

The good news if you’re a season ticket holder is that your seat location will remain intact on your account and eligible for renewal for the next season. Anything that doesn’t get used for the next few months will carry over into next season.

This comes as no surprise as the novel coronavirus continues to impact the DMV. Maryland has a lot of things shut down and after the Washington Football Team and the Baltimore Ravens had fans at a few games in November, as of now they’re scaled back to having no fans. The Virginia governor is scheduled to speak today about restrictions.

The Washington Wizards will be set to be the first to use an empty Capital One Arena on Thursday, Dec. 17th when they host the Detroit Pistons in a preseason contest. That will mark the first game inside that building since March 10th when they defeated the New York Knicks.

Hopefully this virus will end soon or at least die down so we can all reconvene at Capital One Arena someday.
