The Washington Capitals have made the following roster cuts.

The Washington Capitals have trimmed their training camp roster. After having an intrasquad scrimmage, their second and final, Peter Laviolette has met with several players in his office last night. The Caps loaned several players to the Hershey Bears and placed several more on waivers.

The Caps loaned the following to the Bears: Kody Clark, Brett Leason, Garrett Pilon, Joe Snively, and Riley Sutter. Additionally, the Caps have re-signed Axel Jonsson-Fjallby from Vasterviks to Hershey, and Hendrix Lapierre has been loaned to Chicoutimi of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

The Caps announced these following players would go to waivers: Daniel Carr, Zach Fucale, Shane Gersich, Lucas Johansen, Paul LaDue, Cameron Schilling, Michael Sgarbossa, Phillippe Maillet, and Pheonix Copley. They’ll find out tomorrow at noon whether or not they will clear. Whoever doesn’t clear will likely find their way onto the taxi squad.

Copley going to waivers means one thing, the Caps will be going with Vitek Vanecek as the backup goalie to begin the season with Craig Anderson likely on the taxi squad.

The players that went to waivers are all quality players that could benefit on another team if they get picked up off of waivers.

If they clear, they have a chance to make it onto the Caps taxi squad. It also means these moves are making the final opening night roster begin to crystallize.

All these cuts and players on waivers leaves the Caps with 25 players on their training camp roster. Another additional cut appeared to be Martin Fehervary, who wasn’t present during Monday’s practice as well as veteran netminder Craig Anderson who signed a PTO before training camp.

The Caps will have a taxi squad practice on Tuesday and by then we should know who will make it onto that squad. The time for that practice is still to be determined with the main group practicing at 11 a.m. and media availability taking place at 12:15.
