Fans around the DMV are fired up that the Washington Capitals are back in action. After their reverse retro line flew off the shelves, the same thing is happening when they began to sell the navy blue third jerseys.

The top three items sold on NHL.com between opening night on Jan. 13th and Feb. 1 have all been Caps navy blue jerseys, according to The Athletic. The media outlet reached out to Fanatics to get the official numbers.

Alex Ovechkin‘s navy blue jersey is the top seller, no surprises there. Tom Wilson and T.J. Oshie‘s jerseys took second and third place. The design of the jersey pays homage to the Navy blue jerseys worn at the 2018 Stadium Series combined with the 2015 NHL Winter Classic with the giant W.

The Capitals beat the Toronto Maple Leafs in the Stadium Sereies while downing the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2015 Winter Classic. The Stadium Series was held at the Naval Academy in Annapolis. The three stars above the W represent the fans and frontline workers in the DMV (D.C., Maryland, and Virginia).

The Caps are 1-1 so far in their navy blue third jersey after beating the New York Islanders and falling recently on Sunday to the Philadelphia Flyers. We can’t say if they’re good luck or bad luck yet. I’d imagine the Caps going 4-0 the four times they wear the reverse retro jersey.

The Caps were supposed to wear the reverse retro on Tuesday night until the game got postponed. As for the navy blue third jerseys, we’ll see those again on February 21 when the Caps host the New York Rangers at Capital One Arena.

Jim Van Stone, Monumental Sports president of business operations and chief commercial officer told Sean Shapiro of The Athletic (subscription required):

"“Our primary color scheme has always been red, white and blue, but red and white have been much more dominant. We’ve never really had a dominant blue jersey. When we had the opportunity to play at Navy it was a chance to use blue that year. And we got really good feedback from fans at the time and since then.”"

That good feedback carried over to two sweet jerseys the Caps get to wear this season, as well as the clamoring on social media for the screaming eagle to make a comeback. Now the Caps have arguably the best jerseys in the league and the numbers from the sales on Fanatics and Adidas back that up.
