Washington Capitals rally to down Devils

The Washington Capitals bounced back from Saturday’s loss and finally got over their afternoon game woes with a 4-3 win over the New Jersey Devils at Capital One Arena.

The first 20 minutes were more of the same from the day before as the Caps looked sluggish. Nick Jensen was called for high sticking at 8:15, putting the Devils on the power play. On the attack, Andreas Johnsson scored the power play goal at 9:35 to put the Devils up 1-0.

1-0 would be the score after 20 with the Caps leading in shots 11-10.

The Devils would double their lead at 3:55 with a goal from 2019 first overall pick Jack Hughes for his fourth goal of the season. It looked like things would be bleak for the Caps but then they turned it on with four unanswered goals.

Sami Vatanen went to the box for hooking Richard Panik at 13:13, putting the Caps on the power play. On the attack the Caps got on the board at 13:38 with T.J. Oshie tipping in a shot from John Carlson. Nicklas Backstrom had the secondary assist.

2-1 Devils would be the score after two with the Caps leading in shots 15-5.

Almost halfway through the third the Caps tied it at 9:16 with a snipe from Carlson for his fifth goal of the season. Brenden Dillon and Jakub Vrana had the helpers and Carlson’s shot came from the right face off circle.

At the 10 minute mark, Kyle Palmieri went to the box for holding Panik. On the power play, Oshie scored on a shot up the middle for his second goal of the game and fourth of the season. Evgeny Kuznetsov and Lars Eller had the assists and the goal came at 11:53.

At 16:49 the Caps would get a penalty after killing off a big penalty. Ryan Murray went to the sin bin for tripping Carl Hagelin. On the attack who else but Alex Ovechkin to score an insurance goal. Ovechkin was positioned in the corner of the net and was wide open when he ripped it in for his sixth goal of the season. The goal came at 16:56 and was assisted by Oshie and Backstrom.

The Devils got a goal back with a goal from Nikita Gusev. That would be as close as they would get as the Caps held on for a 4-3 win. Craig Anderson got the start in goal and made 23 saves for his first win as a member of the Caps.

The Caps will open up a two game series with the Pittsburgh Penguins beginning tomorrow night.
