The Washington Capitals will take on the Boston Bruins tonight after beginning their road trip with a sweep over the Devils in New Jersey. In their latest win, Alex Ovechkin came through with the game winning goal.

It was Ovechkin’s seventh goal of the season and the 713th of his career. He now sits five goals shy of passing Phil Esposito (717 goals) for the sixth most goals in NHL history. Ovechkin’s most recent goal was his 362nd career goal scored on the road, which is tied with Steve Yzerman for the second most in NHL history.

In addition, Ovechkin sits at 262 power play goal, making him four shy of passing Brett Hull (265) for the second most power play goals in NHL history. He has scored against 145 different NHL goaltenders. There have been 6,464 players in NHL history that have scored 145 or fewer in their career.

Ovechkin averages 0.61 goals per game in his career which is the highest among the NHL’s eight players who have scored 700 career goals. He has146 career multi goal games which is 62 more multi goal games than the next closest player since Ovechkin’s rookie season in 2005-06. That player is Sidney Crosby.

The Caps got the puck in transition. Nick Jensen moved the puck up ice to Lars Eller. Eller fed the puck to Ovechkin and he shot it right up the middle for the goal. He is now a quarter of the way to a 30 goal season. Ovechkin has had 15 in his career, in every season he’s played.

Ovechkin’s 15 30 goal campaigns trail only Mike Gartner (17) for the most in league history. Additonally his 15 career 30 goal seasons are tied with Gartner and Jaromir Jagr for the longest run by an NHL player.

At 1,295 career points with 713 goals and 582 assists, Ovechkin is five points away from becoming the 35th player in NHL history to reach the 1,300 point mark. He is looking to become the 20th player in NHL history to reach that mark in fewer than 1,200 games played and only Brett Hull reached the mark with at least 700 goals scored.
