The Washington Capitals will take on the Philadelphia Flyers tonight in their first game since the trade deadline. The Caps didn’t do much of a shakeup but they did make a big splash by trading away Jakub Vrana and Richard Panik as well as this year’s first rounder and next year’s second rounder for Anthony Mantha.

They gave up a lot to acquire Mantha and he’ll have to prove himself and try to win the fans over after many of them were upset over the departure of Vrana. There is also that crowd that was happy Vrana got traded after they thought he underperformed and came up short in the playoffs.

Mantha was on the ice for the Caps morning skate at MedStar Capitals Iceplex. He was skating at the left wing on the second line alongside Nicklas Backstrom and T.J. Oshie.

Here is how the forward lines looked at morning skate via Samantha Pell of The Washington Post:

Here were the Caps power play units:

First unit: Carlson, Ovechkin, Backstrom, Oshie, Kuznetsov
Second unit: Orlov, Schultz, Mantha, Sheary, Wilson

Depth forward Michael Raffl wasn’t on the ice after being acquired from the Flyers yesterday at the buzzer of the trade deadline. He won’t be available for the game tonight.

It looks like there will be no changes to the defense. Ilya Samsonov was in the starter’s net and will get the nod in goal tonight. Mantha found out he got traded when he woke up from a pregame nap. Once he got word, he said goodbye to his teammates and headed to D.C.

He called it “A new beginning over here”. He missed the initial phone call that he was traded and after he woke up saw a text from general manager Steve Yzerman saying “Call me ASAP.”
