Washington Capitals vs. Islanders: No Ovechkin?
After defeating the New York Islanders 1-0 in a shootout, the Washington Capitals will meet the Isles in a Saturday night rematch on Long Island. In a scoreless game for the 60 minute regulation, there was a combined one goal scored in the last 120 minutes. We’ll tack on five more minutes for the overtime period.

The game was decided in the skills challenge with Nicklas Backstrom and Evgeny Kuznetsov scoring and Ilya Samsonov stopping the pucks in net the rest of the way for the shoutout. It wasn’t a pretty game but it was a big two points to start this big three game series and critical final 10 game stretch.
The win kept the Caps ahead of the pack in first place in the MassMutual East Division with a 30-13-4 record with 64 points. The Pittsburgh Penguins and Islanders are right behind them with 63 with the Boston Bruins in fourth with 60. It’s a tight race to the finish.
The Caps held a morning skate as of this writing at Nassau. Per Samantha Pell of The Washington Post, Alex Ovechkin wasn’t on the ice. Here’s what the forward lines could look like without Ovechkin. We’ll know for sure whether he’s in or not at warmups.
