After an exciting and emotional win over the New York Islanders, the Washington Capitals are back in action looking to protect first place in the MassMutual East Division. The Pittsburgh Penguins come to town, who are right behind them by just a point. It’s a two game series as the rivalry returns in front of fans at Capital One Arena.

It is the seventh meeting between the teams with Washington holding a 2-1-3 record. It is their first meeting since February and a lot has changed. The Penguins got off to a slow start but have since played their best hockey. In fact, both teams have played their best hockey.

The Penguins are coming off a series split with the Boston Bruins of two games, their most recent being a loss. Your Capitals are coming off a three game sweep of the Islanders. The Caps have earned points in each of the two previous home games against the Pens with a 1-0-1 record and have outscored Pittsburgh 7-5.

Daniel Sprong scored the lone goal for the Caps in their win against the Islanders Tuesday and comes into this game with a two game point and goal streak. He’s thrived on the top line filling in for Alex Ovechkin, who hasn’t been on the ice and is still day to day with a lower body injury.

The last time the Caps played the Pens was on Feb. 25 in a game Washington prevailed 5-2. This will be the first Caps vs. Pens game this season to be played in front of fans.

In an article by Mike Vogel of WashingtonCaps.com, Carl Hagelin said:

"“It’s going to feel like the first game of the season against them. It’s been two months, and a lot of hockey has been played in those two months since we played them. Both teams have changed, and we’re looking forward to the challenge. We know what type of team they are, and they’ve obviously found a way to keep winning games with a lot of injuries.”"
