Before the Washington Capitals and Boston Bruins open the Stanley Cup playoffs, they’ll take on each other Tuesday night in a meaningless affair to put it bluntly. The seedings for the MassMutual East Divison will be set so don’t be surprised to see both teams resting regulars in this one.

The Caps head into this game 3-4-0 against the Bruins as each game was more interesting than the last. The Caps have scored nine power play goals on 29 power play opportunities against the Bruins, good for a 31 percent success rate. On the other end, the Caps have allowed three goals against on 23 power play opportunities for the Bruins. That’s an 87 percent success rate.

Since the start of the 2014-15 season the Caps are 19-6-0 against the Bruins. That’s the most wins in the NHL against Boston during that span. That includes a 9-3-0 record at Capital One Arena outscoring the Bruins 40-25 in those 12 games.

The Caps are coming off a 2-1 win over the Philadelphia Flyers where they scored a goal late in the third period from Lars Eller and won the game in overtime thanks to Conor Sheary. It was a big win even though it didn’t give the Caps the division.

The Caps have a lot of guys hurt and they lost T.J. Oshie in this game. Oshie didn’t practice with the team yesterday but Nicklas Backstrom and Alex Ovechkin did. It would be wise to rest the key guys as the playoff grind promises to be a physical one ahead.

Keep your eye on the fourth line of Carl Hagelin, Nic Dowd, and Garnet Hathaway tonight. They have skated together for 507:40 of five on five ice time, the highest total a Capitals forward line has played together this season. The trio are also the only Caps forwards to appear in every game. They’ve scored 19 goals together at five on five while allowing 19.
