Washington Capitals re-sign Shane Gersich to one year deal

The Washington Capitals have re-signed Shane Gersich once again, this time extending him to a one year, two way contract where he will make $750,000 in the NHL and $187,500 in the AHL the team announced on Saturday.

Last season the 24 year old recorded 14 points with six goals and eight assists in 33 games with the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL). The five foot 11, 180 pound forward finished the pandemic shortened 2019-20 season with 18 points with a career high 10 goals in 54 games with the Bears to go along with eight assists. He also had his first career AHL hat trick on Jan. 31, 2020 at Brideport.

The Chaska, Minnesota native made his NHL debut on March 28, 2018 against the New York Rangers at Capital One Arena and appeared in three games the remainder of that season where he recorded an assist. He also played in two playoff games, both occurring in the Eastern Conference semifinal against the Pittsburgh Penguins en route to the Caps first Stanley Cup.

2018-19 was Gerichts first full professional season with he Bears. He recorded 24 points with eight goals and 16 assists. He added another three points with one goal and two assists in nine playoff games with Hershey. He led Bears rookies with two power play goals and ranked second with 0.36 points per game among Hershey rookies with at least 10 games played. He’s recorded 56 points in 153 career games with the Bears with 24 goals and 32 assists.

Gersich was selected in the fifth round at 134th overall in the 2014 NHL Draft. He spent his NCAA career at the University of North Dakota recording 77 points in 117 games with 43 goals and 34 assists. He was an NCAA All Star Team Honorable Mention his sophomore year after leading North Dakota in points with 21 goals and 16 assists in 40 games. That season included nine multi point games.
